BILL NUMBER: S6105 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the education law, in relation to establishing an arts advisory committee for the New York city public school district PURPOSE : To establish an Arts Advisory Committee in the City of New York, to advise the members of the board on matters relating to arts in education. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : This bill amends section 2590-b of the education law to establish an arts advisory committee, to advise the board on matters related to art in the schools. This committee will be empowered to: * Advise the board on educational and instructional policies regarding arts education; * Report annually of the effectiveness of the district in providing arts education; * Make recommendations regarding improvements in the efficiency and delivery of arts education; and * Hold public meetings regarding arts education. SERRANO, HUNTLEY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to establishing an arts advisory committee for the New York city public school district THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 2590-b of the education law, as amended by a chap- ter of the laws of 2009 amending the education law and other laws relat- ing to the New York city board of education, as proposed in legislative bills numbers S.5887 and A.8903-A, is amended by adding a new subdivi- sion 8 to read as follows: 8. (A) THERE SHALL BE AN ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE CREATED PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION TO ADVISE CITY BOARD MEMBERS ON MATTERS RELATED TO THE ARTS IN THE SCHOOLS. THE ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE SHALL HAVE THE POWER TO: (I) ADVISE AND COMMENT ON ANY EDUCATIONAL OR INSTRUCTIONAL POLICY INVOLVING ARTS EDUCATION; (II) ISSUE AN ANNUAL REPORT ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT IN PROVIDING ARTS EDUCATION AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS, AS APPRO- PRIATE, ON HOW TO IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY AND DELIVERY OF SUCH SERVICES; AND (III) HOLD PUBLIC MEETINGS TO DISCUSS ISSUES RELATED TO ARTS EDUCA- TION. S 2. This act shall take effect on the same date and in the same manner as a chapter of the laws of 2009 amending the education law and other laws relating to the New York city board of education, as proposed in legislative bills numbers S.5887 and A.8903-A, takes effect.
