BILL NUMBER: S3471 SPONSOR: BROOKS TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the executive law, in relation to the establishment of a veteran career assistance program within the SUNY and CUNY systems PURPOSE: This bill requires the director of the Division of Veterans Affairs to collaborate with SUNY and CUNY, in order to develop a Veteran Career Assistance Program. Similar to the assistance currently provided to SUNY and CUNY students, this program will assist veterans in translating their military experiences and skills for the purpose of building a civilian resume. Further this program will also provide employment placement services for veterans. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1. directs the Division to establish a veterans' career assist- ance program, in collaboration with SUNY and CUNY.

The executive law is amended by adding a new section 353-b to read as follows: § 353-B. VETERAN CAREER ASSISTANCE. THE DIRECTOR, TOGETHER WITH THE CHANCELLOR OF THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AND THE CHANCELLOR OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, SHALL ESTABLISH A VETERAN CAREER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM. SUCH PROGRAM SHALL PROVIDE HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WITH ASSISTANCE IN RESUME WRITING AND EMPLOYMENT PLACEMENT SERVICES. THE PROGRAM SHALL BE DEVELOPED AND MAINTAINED WITH RESOURCES ALREADY AVAIL- ABLE TO THE DIVISION AND THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEMS. THE DIRECTOR SHALL REPORT TO THE LEGISLATURE ON AN ANNUAL BASIS, THE NUMBER OF VETERANS UTILIZING THE CAREER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM. § 2.
