BILL NUMBER: S5018 Revised SPONSOR: SCARCELLA-SPANTON TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the veterans' services law, in relation to the estab- lishment of a veteran career assistance program within the SUNY and CUNY systems PURPOSE: The purpose of this bill is to require the director of the Division of Veterans Affairs to collaborate with SUNY and CUNY, in order to develop a Veteran Career Assistance Program. Similar to the assistance currently provided to SUNY and CUNY students, this program will assist veterans in translating their military experiences and skills for building a civil- ian resume. Further, this program will also provide employment placement services for veterans. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1. Amends the executive law by adding a new section 353-b

SCARCELLA-SPANTON -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Veterans, Home- land Security and Military Affairs AN ACT to amend the veterans' services law, in relation to the estab- lishment of a veteran career assistance program within the SUNY and CUNY systems THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The veterans' services law is amended by adding a new section 5-a to read as follows: § 5-A. VETERAN CAREER ASSISTANCE. THE STATE COMMISSIONER, TOGETHER WITH THE CHANCELLOR OF THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AND THE CHANCEL- LOR OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, SHALL ESTABLISH A VETERAN CAREER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM. SUCH PROGRAM SHALL PROVIDE VETERANS WITH ASSISTANCE IN RESUME WRITING AND EMPLOYMENT PLACEMENT SERVICES. THE PROGRAM SHALL BE DEVELOPED AND MAINTAINED WITH RESOURCES ALREADY AVAILABLE TO THE DIVISION AND THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEMS INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, CAMPUS VETERANS SERVICE OFFICES, CAREER CENTERS, AND OPPORTUNITY CENTERS. § 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred twentieth day after it shall have become a law. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted.
