An Eagle Scout from Phelps is receiving honors from leaders across New York State for his work serving the local Masonic Lodge.

Gerrad Crofoot of Troop 46 was recognized this weekend for his project building a community trail, fire pit and meeting space behind the lodge. His troop has held meetings there for the past five years, after losing access to their previous space.

Crofoot said he wanted to thank the Masons for opening their doors by transforming what used to be a thicket of weeds and brush into a gathering place. He credited businesses that donated or discounted materials and community members who gave their time, tools and effort.

“It’s very surreal. I was not expecting for it to come out this well, especially at first during the planning periods, but it came out very well. A lot of the community helped and I’m thankful,” Crofoot said.

Along with a proclamation from state Sen. Pam Helming, Crofoot received a flag from Rep. Claudia Tenney’s office and certificates of recognition from Gov. Kathy Hochul, NASA, the Marine Corps and more.

His project is also up for “Project of the Year.
