Miller Field umbrella confusion sparks flood of calls from Staten Island parents

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Confusion over whether spectators are permitted to hold umbrellas while cheering on athletes at New Dorp’s Miller Field sent Staten Island soccer parents scrambling for answers this week and rallying lawmakers to intervene.
Told by an area soccer league that handheld umbrellas were banned at Miller Field, a large number of residents reached out to Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, City Councilmember Frank Morano and at least one resident reaching out to state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton.
The office of the congresswoman, a Republican representing Staten Island and part of Brooklyn, sent the clarification to the soccer league, the spokesperson said. Spanton’s office and Morano’s office clarified the rules for residents, as well.
Jessica Schoenholtz Murphy praised the senator’s office for quick efforts to relay accurate information.
