NEW YORK STATE — New legislation announced Tuesday in New York aims to “protect” childhood vaccination standards.

Assemblywoman Amy Paulin and State Senator Shelley Mayer introduced a bill that would update state laws to clarify that childhood vaccine requirements and schedules in New York must be governed by regulations set by the State Health Commissioner.

The commissioner would be required to rely on generally accepted medical standards and recommendations from recognized medical and scientific organizations.

This comes after federal health officials said they are now recommending vaccines for 11 diseases—down from the previous 17.

The American Academy of Pediatrics announced this week that it will maintain its prior recommendations, diverging from the recent federal changes.
