Westchester State Senator Shelley B. Mayer, Chair of the Senate Education Committee, released a video of her reading ‘Grace Goes to Washington,’ a beloved children’s book about the three branches of government and a student council’s struggle to decide how to spend money from a school fund-raiser. The recording was released in celebration of World Read Aloud Day which is celebrated on Wednesday, February 3rd.

‘Grace Goes to Washington’ was written by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by LeUyen Pham, the award winning team of the New York Times bestseller ‘Grace for President.’

Senator Shelley B. Mayer said, “I am glad to participate in World Read Aloud Day with this delightful story about leadership and public service. Children have had their lives turned upside down during the pandemic. Books provide a safe space to turn to, build imagination, and also strengthen academic skills. ‘Grace Goes to Washington’ is one of my favorite stories, and I am glad to share the book with others.”

‘Grace Goes to Washington’ synopsis: “When Grace learns about the three branches of the United States government, she and the rest of the student council put the lesson into practice as they debate how to spend the money from a school fund-raiser. The arguments continue as they travel to Washington, DC, for a field trip. Grace feels closer than ever to her dream of becoming president someday, but she and her classmates have a lot to learn about what it means to serve the needs of the people, especially when the people want such different things!”
