Senator Addabbo helps constituents pack their new rain barrel into their car.
State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. in partnership with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP) hosted a free Rain Barrel Giveaway on August 10th at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Ozone Park.
The weather was beautiful for the barrel distribution and constituents were excited to receive their barrels. There was a consistent line of recipients as Senator Addabbo gave away 50 barrels.
The 55-gallon plastic rain barrels attach to a rain gutter to collect and store excess water during periods of rainfall. That rainwater can then later be used to complete tasks around the house and outdoors, rather than using fresh water. The water collected in the rain barrels is not for drinking.
"Using rain barrels is a simple yet effective way to conserve water and reduce runoff in our communities,” Addabbo said. “By capturing and reusing rainwater, we can promote sustainability and protect our local ecosystems. I encourage everyone to consider incorporating rain barrels into their homes."
