Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. hosted an episode of his podcast “Where Do We Go From Here?” in commemoration of National Nonprofit Day (August 17th). The purpose of the designation of this day is to remind people about the important role these organizations play in our communities and to show appreciation for the work that they do.

"Nonprofit organizations are the backbone of our communities—bridging gaps in governmental services, lifting neighbors, and turning compassion into action,” Senator Addabbo said. “When we support nonprofits, we invest in the health and resilience of every New Yorker."

Senator Addabbo’s guest was Frances O. Scarantino, President/Founder of S.T.A.R.S. which stands for Striving to Achieve & Reach Success, Inc., a community youth organization that focuses on recreation, education and self-development. She spoke about the group’s mission, her process for setting up the nonprofit, common problems she faced and offered advice to new and existing nonprofits.

"Nonprofits give hope and change lives,” Scarantino said. “It is so important to celebrate National Nonprofit Day on August 17th.  As we make a difference in the lives of so many, a natural increase in the quality of life occurs.  Together, we thrive. “

There are a wide variety of nonprofits, and they address issues including mental health, early childhood education, shelter and services for the homeless, recovery aid from storms and other weather events, public safety, and arts and cultural programs.

In 2022, the state had more than 33,500 nonprofits operating across almost all industries. These organizations supported over 1.3 million jobs and generated about $96.8 billion in wages, placing the state among the leading states in these categories. Overall, nonprofits comprised 5% of private-sector establishments, yet they produced over 20% of private-sector jobs in several regions, according to a 2025 report by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

Although nonprofits are important in numerous ways, providing much needed services, like filling in gaps that government doesn’t address and providing jobs to many residents. They also face several common problems, including a heavy dependence on grants, a lack of volunteer recruitment and retention, keeping a steady stream of donors, constant pressure to conduct fundraising, and uncertainty in State and Federal Funding.
