New York, NY — State Senator Julia Salazar, Chair of the Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Correction, released the following statement:
“In 2019, the State of New York ended cash bail for most misdemeanors and non-violent felonies because it was an unconstitutional process that unfairly punished cash-poor New Yorkers, and disproportionately impacted Black and brown New Yorkers. How much money you have should never determine whether or not you spend your time before trial behind bars as a legally innocent person. President Trump’s executive order will force many low-income and Black residents of Washington, D.C. into jail, while their white counterparts are released pre-trial.
Trump is also once again seeking to revoke funding for states that do not adhere to his harmful policies that attack our constituents and neighbors. This is a play that the Trump administration has already used to attack LGBTQ+ Americans and immigrant communities. Now, he is deploying this same tactic to punish working class, Black and brown New Yorkers. We cannot tolerate these attacks on our people and on our civil liberties in New York.”
