Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick Urges Interior Department to Reconsider Empire Wind 1 Project

(Long Beach, NY) - Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick today penned a formal letter to the U.S. Department of the Interior urging a halt to the Empire Wind 1 offshore wind project, citing deep concerns over its environmental impacts, disruption to Long Island communities, and the lack of public transparency and oversight.

“While I support a responsible pursuit of clean, renewable energy, it cannot come at the expense of our local communities or the safety and quality of life of South Shore residents.  The Empire Wind 1 project has consistently raised red flags, from threats to marine life and commercial fishing, to inadequate public input and transparency throughout the Article VII process,” said Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick.

She continued, “In the wake of recent maritime tragedies, serious concerns have emerged about the project’s potential to disrupt shipping lanes, interfere with radar systems near major airports, and cause long-term economic harm. Albany and corporate developers must not steamroll local control. We need independent oversight and genuine community engagement before any project moves forward.”

Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick remains committed to responsible energy development that aligns with environmental stewardship and the interests of her local community.
