Statement by State Senator Shelley B. Mayer on the Terror Attack in Boulder
"Yesterday we confronted yet another heinous act of terror against Jews, this time in Boulder, CO. Innocent people had gathered — on the first day of Shavuot, a Jewish holiday commemorating the Torah — in a busy walking mall for a peaceful event calling for the release of Israeli hostages still being held in Gaza. During this gathering, a man armed with a homemade flamethrower began throwing Molotov cocktails into the crowd.
"This was another targeted act of terror and violence against the Jewish community, occurring just ten days after two innocent Jews were senselessly murdered in D.C. just for being Jewish and less than two months after the arson attack on Governor Shapiro's Governor's residence at the start of Passover. I am angry and fearful that this could become the new normal in the United States – we cannot allow that to happen.
"We are better than this. We can refuse to let hate divide us. We can speak up and decry antisemitism and hatred publicly and strongly. We can prosecute and punish acts that violate our laws, and strengthen our laws to meet this moment.
"I extend my gratitude to the Boulder Police and EMS for their swift response, and I appreciate the FBI's prompt involvement in investigating this as a terror attack. Lastly, I am deeply thankful that no one succumbed to their injuries."
