Alfred Gryszkiewicz from the Comptroller's Office helps a long line of attendees at the Peter Cardella Senior Center search for unclaimed funds.
Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. is encouraging seniors to search for unclaimed money by bringing representatives from the New York State Comptroller’s Office of Unclaimed Funds to local senior centers across his district. The initiative began at Sacred Heart Golden Age Senior Center in Woodhaven and the Peter Cardella Senior Center in Glendale, with more visits planned.
Through a simple name and address search, representatives help determine whether an individual has unclaimed funds and explain the next steps if additional information is needed. Many seniors discovered money through the searches.
Searches and claims are free through the Comptroller’s office. The Office returns a record $651 million annually to rightful owners (State Fiscal Year 2025–26) and holds more than $20 billion in total unclaimed funds statewide.
Unclaimed funds are forgotten or dormant money and property that is transferred to the state after a period of inactivity. The most comment sources are savings and checking accounts, uncashed paychecks, utility and rental deposits, insurance benefits, stocks and dividends, and unused gift cards.
“Many of our seniors work hard their whole lives, and no one should have to wonder whether money meant for them is out there,” Addabbo said. “I’m proud to bring the Comptroller’s unclaimed funds resources to our senior centers so residents can check for lost money for free.”
Senator Addabbo expresses his appreciation to the senior centers for their participation and to the Comptroller’s Office for its support.
