Addabbo Hosts Podcast Commemorating Financial Literacy Month
May 8, 2026
During National Financial Literacy Month (April), Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. hosted a podcast with special guest Amélie Garcia Manukian, Insurance and Financial Literacy Workshop Coordinator at QUALIFIED Employee Benefits, Inc., about what it means to be financially literate and why it matters. They emphasized that fundamentals include using insurance wisely, budgeting, reducing debt, saving for emergencies, and seeking regular guidance.
"Financial literacy isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity for everyday life and long-term security,” Addabbo said. “When people understand how to manage their money, and when workplaces provide practical guidance through smart, affordable protections like insurance, we strengthen families, build stronger businesses, and create healthier communities."
The pair noted that financial literacy reduces risk and workplace stress, and that many employers now offer AI-supported financial wellness coaching as a benefit. They described literacy as having knowledge, clarity, control, and confidence, with the importance growing as life and income change.
On practical topics, Manukian advised that debit is mainly for withdrawals, while credit cards offer protection, access to credit, rewards, and potential score benefits when paid promptly. An emergency fund of 3–6 months of expenses is vital, and cash value life insurance loans can be a helpful emergency option in some cases.
Insurance was highlighted as the foundation for steady financial growth across medical, life, disability, long-term care, auto, and renters’ coverages. Signs of financial strength include smart budgeting, no high-interest debt, a solid credit score, automatic saving, and diversified investments. Manukian encouraged employers to consider AI-assisted Insurance & Financial Wellness Coaching to boost recruitment, retention, and productivity.
The conversation aligned with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) financial health goals during National Financial Literacy Month.
