Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. informed residents of New York’s Lemon Law while hosting pop-up lemonade stands outside both of his district offices on July 24 to celebrate National Lemon Day (observed on July 23).

Community residents were given complimentary cups of refreshing lemonade along with literature explaining New Yorks’s Lemon Law which protects consumers who purchase a vehicle that is considered a “lemon.” To qualify, it must have substantial, unfixable defects that persist after 4 or more repair attempts and / or the vehicle is out of service for a total of 30 or more consecutive days.

New cars are covered for the first 24 months or 18,000 miles, whichever comes first. Used cars are covered if purchased from a dealer and have fewer than 100,000 miles. The warranty period depends on mileage, ranging from 30 to 90 days. If the vehicle qualifies under the NYS Lemon Law, the manufacturer or dealer is required to refund the purchase price or provide a replacement.

“New York’s Lemon Law gives consumers a real shield when a vehicle doesn’t live up to its warranty, and National Lemon Day is a fun way to remind people that when life gives you lemons, New York gives you protection — and a free lemonade to go with it,” Addabbo said.
