Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. presented a scholarship check from the New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators, of which he is a member, to Emma Fernandez of Ozone Park who is set to graduate from St. Francis Preparatory School and will attend New York University (NYU) in the fall.

She received the Conte Memorial Academic Scholarship in the amount of $3,000. Senator Addabbo presented her with an oversized novelty check at his Woodhaven District Office on June 11, 2026, to commemorate her achievements.

The New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators awards four $3,000 scholarships each year to New York students who excel academically, help their communities, and demonstrate financial need. There are two types of awards: the Conte Memorial Academic Scholarship and the Marchi Memorial Athletic Scholarship. To be eligible, applicants must be residents of New York, have an 85% GPA or higher and demonstrate financial need, and excel in athletics in the case of the Marchi Memorial Athletic Scholarship.

Emma Fernandez was awarded the prestigious scholarship in recognition of her outstanding commitment to community service and academic excellence. Through extensive volunteer work during high school and beyond, Emma has accumulated over 100 hours at Jamaica Hospital, Ozone Park, and Lions Club events, including trunk-or-treats and Christmas Tree Lighting ceremonies. Her dedication to helping others aligns with her determination to pursue a career in nursing as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

"Emma’s academic excellence and community service embody the best of our district,” Addabbo said. “I wish her all the best as she pursues her future career as a CRNA. I’m sure she will be very successful.”
