(Binghamton, NY)  Today, New York State Senator Lea Webb honored US Navy Veteran Lieutenant James (Jim) H. Alexander,  Jr. with a NYS Liberty Medal, the highest civilian honor that can be bestowed by a member of the State Senate.

During World War II, Alexander joined the Navy's V-12 College Training Program, which placed future officers on college campuses to receive academic and leadership training. This program prepared him for his commission as a Lieutenant Junior Grade, after which he served aboard the  USS Denver in the Atlantic during the closing years of the War.

After returning home, Alexander joined IBM's Federal Systems Division, continuing his service to his country as an electrical engineer working on military and aerospace projects that strengthened America's defense during the Cold War. In addition to his professional achievements, Alexander served his community for more than 30 years in local sports as a certified referee in high school and college athletics, officiating football and ice hockey with fairness and respect. When the ice rink at Grippen  Park opened, Alexander organized and trained local referees, helping build a lasting hockey community in Broome County. An avid athlete, Alexander enjoyed skiing until he was 89 and continued playing tennis and pickleball into his 90s. He celebrated his 100th birthday in November of 2025.

“I am deeply honored to present the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to James Alexander, a true American hero whose life reflects a remarkable legacy of service,” said Senator Lea Webb. “Jim answered the call to serve during World War II in the United States Navy, demonstrating courage at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. Here in Broome County, Jim served as a referee and mentor, helping to build a strong and lasting local sports community. I am profoundly grateful for his service and proud to honor him.”
