SENATOR MARK WALCZYK HONORS ANDREA SMITH AS 2026 WOMEN OF DISTINCTION FOR DISTRICT 49
May 6, 2026
Senator Mark Walczyk is proud to announce that Andrea Smith was honored last night, May 6, 2026, at the New York State Senate Women of Distinction ceremony. The Women of Distinction program recognizes women whose leadership, volunteerism, and advocacy have measurably strengthened their communities—qualities Andrea has demonstrated throughout her career.
A North Country native based in Morristown, Andrea Smith brings a deep commitment to people-centered community development. In her role as External Affairs Manager for National Grid, she works closely with local leaders and residents to align infrastructure planning with community priorities. Her practical, collaborative approach reflects decades of service to the region.
Andrea’s public-sector record in Ogdensburg spans 14 years. She became city planner in 2011 and served twice as interim city manager in 2022 and 2023. Andrea played a pivotal role in securing state funding to address stormwater needs and led efforts to improve the municipal pool. Most notably, she managed the $43 million wastewater treatment facility upgrade—an investment with a lasting, tangible impact on public health and local resilience.
Beyond municipal work, Andrea served a nine-year term on the New York Planning Federation Board of Directors, helping shape statewide conversations on planning, climate resilience, and equitable community development. She holds a B.A. in Landscape Architecture and master's degrees in landscape architecture and urban and Regional Planning from Virginia Tech, training that informs her thoughtful, solutions-focused leadership.
“Andrea Smith is the kind of leader who makes government work for people — not the other way around. She sees a problem, brings people together, and delivers real improvements that touch everyday lives,” said Senator Mark Walczyk. “Her work in Ogdensburg and across the North Country has made our communities safer, healthier, and better prepared for the future. Honoring Andrea is a celebration of effective public service and a reminder on what happens when dedicated people come together; they can solve real problems. We should all be very grateful for her service. I am proud to call her a Woman of Distinction.”
