Sleepy Hollow, NY–New York State Senator Pete Harckham announced today the completion of a major sidewalk improvement project in front of Philipsburg Manor that will enhance pedestrian safety, accessibility, and the visitor experience along one of Sleepy Hollow’s busiest historic corridors.

Senator Harckham joined New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Village of Sleepy Hollow officials recently to view the completed project, which reconstructed the sidewalk on North Broadway (Route 9) between Pocantico Street and Pierson Avenue.

The project was made possible through a $200,000 state grant that Senator Harckham secured for the Village of Sleepy Hollow while representing the community in the State Senate.

“When sidewalks fall into disrepair, pedestrian safety suffers and local economic activity can be affected, both of which are vital to communities like Sleepy Hollow,” said Harckham. “I was proud to secure this funding to create a safer, more welcoming streetscape for residents and visitors as they enjoy Sleepy Hollow's historic attractions, local businesses, and vibrant downtown.”

North Broadway serves as one of the village’s primary pedestrian corridors and connects several of Sleepy Hollow’s most significant historic destinations, including Philipsburg Manor, the Old Dutch Church, and Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, which together welcome thousands of visitors each year. The sidewalk is also heavily used by students from the Sleepy Hollow School District, making safe pedestrian access especially important during peak travel times.

The previous sidewalk had deteriorated over time, with uneven pavement, large cracks, and craters that created safety hazards and diminished the appearance of the corridor. The completed improvements include a level, ADA-accessible sidewalk with new curb ramps, updated wayfinding signage directing visitors to nearby historic attractions, benches, and newly planted trees. In addition to enhancing the pedestrian experience, the tree canopy will help reduce heat island effects, improve stormwater management, and lower long-term maintenance costs.

Funding for the project was provided through New York State’s Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability, and Technology (CREST) program, which supports critical infrastructure improvements for municipalities and nonprofit organizations. The program helps communities strengthen resilience, improve operational efficiency, and better serve residents.

Since taking office in 2019, Senator Harckham has secured more than $40 million in state capital funding for municipalities, schools, and nonprofit organizations throughout New York State Senate District 40.
