On August 4, Senator Steve Rhoads and 10 members of his summer legislative intern program partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Long Island to help build a home for a local family. The group traveled to Bay Shore, where they traded their legislative work for hard hats and hammers, rolling up their sleeves to help create a path toward the American Dream of homeownership.

Under the guidance of Habitat for Humanity construction managers, Senator Rhoads and his interns helped install and secure heavy plywood sheathing, an important step in the construction process that enclosed the home’s exterior structure and provided critical protection from the elements.

The annual day of service has become a cornerstone of Senator Rhoads’ summer internship program, giving students the opportunity to step beyond the legislative process and experience the impact of hands-on community service. This year’s project was coordinated by legislative intern Anthony D’Alessandro, who helped spearhead the initiative and provide his fellow interns with the opportunity to make a hands-on impact in the community. Through their work on the build site, the interns gained firsthand insight into the challenges facing families seeking affordable housing on Long Island while developing a deeper appreciation for the skilled trades and the hardworking men and women who help build our communities.

This year’s effort marks the second consecutive summer that Senator Rhoads has incorporated community service projects into his youth internship program. The continued partnership with Habitat for Humanity reflects a shared commitment to expanding homeownership opportunities, strengthening neighborhoods, and helping families achieve long-term stability throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
