Fourteen outstanding women from across the 5th Senate District were honored for their service, leadership, and contributions to their communities at New York State Senator Steven Rhoads’ 4th Annual Women of Distinction Ceremony on Thursday, September 17, at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library. 

As a fierce advocate for women and families, Senator Rhoads established the annual ceremony to shine a spotlight on the women whose service, leadership, and dedication help strengthen communities throughout Nassau County. The event celebrates women who have made a meaningful difference through their professional accomplishments, volunteerism, advocacy, and commitment to helping others.

“Every year, this ceremony reminds me of the incredible people who make our communities so special,” said Senator Steve Rhoads. “These 14 women have each made a lasting impact in their own unique way, and it was a privilege to recognize them and thank them for all they have done. Their stories of service, perseverance, leadership, and compassion are exactly the kind of examples we want our young people to see. I hope this evening not only celebrated their accomplishments, but inspired the next generation to step forward and make a difference in their own communities.”

The evening opened with a prayer from Reverend and Senior Pastor Iwy Patel-Yatri and Hispanic Ministry Pastor Rosa Larios of Hicksville United Methodist Church, setting a tone of reflection and gratitude for the celebration ahead.

Jessica Nunez performed the National Anthem, followed by performances from talented local artists with RAFCO Entertainment & Management, under the direction of Dominick Raffaele. The evening’s performers included Gabriella Sferlazza and Jessica Nunez, showcasing the talent of local performers and adding to the celebration of the honorees.

The ceremony featured a keynote address from Wantagh’s own Shashi Malik, President of the Seva Center for Humanity. A longtime Wantagh resident and community leader, Malik has dedicated decades to humanitarian and charitable service. She was previously recognized by Senator Rhoads as a 2025 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction.

Members of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County also assisted with the evening’s program, giving young women an opportunity to participate in a celebration centered on leadership, service, and community.

The ceremony concluded with a performance of “God Bless America” by Daniel Frankel, bringing the evening to a close with a celebration of community and country.

Senator Rhoads presented each honoree with a Women of Distinction award and thanked them for the difference they have made throughout the communities they call home.
